Find a photographer you love

This is so important, you only graduate high school once and you want to have someone who you absolutely adore everything about their style, vibe, work, and who they are. Senior photos should capture all that you are while adventuring, laughing, and having the best time. So stalk the heck outta the photographers you are looking at, look at their work, what past clients have said, talk to them and make sure they include what you are looking for when it comes to products and the experience they are offering.

Make a plan

Talk with your photographer and make a loose plan for your photos. I say loose plan because I always love to see where a good adventure takes you, so it’s not a minute by minute pose plan it’s more along the lines of discussing your vision. Do you have a location that is super special to you that you really want to go for photos, do you play sports or are you involved with any clubs or activities that you want to include, maybe you want some friends to tag along for some photos with them during your session. Talk with your photographer and see how you can make the experience completely customized to YOU. Also your photographer can usually help you with any questions you might have like your outfits, hair and makeup, or locations. This is the perfect time to talk with your photographer if there is something creative//fun that you have in mind. Share your vision, this is your shoot.

Pick your outfits

Everyone always has so many questions about what to wear for photos, my biggest piece of advice: wear what you feel the most confident in and bring a bit of a variety in the outfits you pick out. Your favorite pair of jeans? A must. The more confident you feel the better the experience will be for you. I always love a good dress moment and of course don’t forget those sports uniforms. My rule of thumb: Favorite pair of jeans and a cute top, shorts and a top, maybe a cute sweater, a dress (long, short, romper, etc), sport/activity attire. Like I said, give yourself a little variety in what you are bringing and really just make sure you feel absolutely confident in everything you bring.

hair and makeup

I have had seniors decide to get their hair and makeup done professionally and some who choose not to and to do it on their own. (Both options are very much okay). If you choose to hire someone that day to do your hair and makeup, give yourself plenty of time to get that done and still be to your shoot on time, photographers are always working with lighting and being on time is so important. Make sure you have seen and trust the work of the HMUA, and also ask for referrals from people! If you choose to do it yourself practice practice practice and don’t veer far from your normal routine. These photos are of you for you so you want to look like you and again feel so comfortable.

Props

What or who are you bringing with you? Awards, pets, friends, family, sport/activity items, what is going to help in fully capturing you and what you love? Some of my most favorite “props” have been pets and family. I really can’t stress this enough… these are your photos and should capture and fully encompass everything that is important to you at this time in your life.

make it an adventure

ONTO THE FUN PART. I mean it with everything I have when I say make it an adventure, don’t take it too serious and just have fun. Play, laugh, and just be you. My favorite vibe is candid and natural, you in your element so be that and just have fun. Try something or somewhere new, or go somewhere that means the world to you, but whatever you do… make it an adventure.
